Subject: D8 and the great flood Date: Thu, 27 Mar 1997 15:43:33 -0800 From: Boyd Landerson Shearer Jr Organization:UK Appalachian Center During the month of February, much of Kentucky fell under water, including my house, a D8, an Audio Technica 815a mic, and a pair of MDR phones. The gear was completly soaked. After I rescued much of my belongings, I hung my gear out to dry. I called sony tech services and asked what I should do; they first asked, was it salt water? ... no i responded. Were the batteries in it? ... no, only a tape. Was the water dirty? ... no. Well, it should work ok or not at all, and I was told to make sure it was completely dry beforing powering it up. After a couple of days of air drying, I was certain it couldn't get any drier. I inserted the ac adapter and nothing, at first. Then a few hours later the clock came on, then the some of the controls worked, next the light, and finally after about 36 hours on the ac, the dat would play a tape. A buddy of mine, who cleans beta decks for a local tv station, took it apart and cleaned the transport and heads, before I did any recordings. Well, after about 20 hours of recording, it seems fine. Has anybody had any similar experiences? Should I look out for anything or do anything extra? Date: Sun, 8 Dec 1996 01:21:50 -0600 (CST) well, the most idiotic thing imaginable happened to me. i left my D7 on top of my car after checking to make sure my rush tickets were in the fanny pack with it. i took it out, laid it on top of the car (the fanny pack), took my tickets out, and promptly got back in the car and took off. about 2 blocks later, my friend chris and i hear this awful bumping noise. i thought i ran over a cat or something. chris thought it was a bush. i looked in the mirror and saw something bouncing down the road. i was going at least 40mph. a sound continued coming from the rear of the car, so i stopped to investigate. as soon as i opened my door, i saw in horror that my unziped fanny pack was caught in my door window flapping in the breeze. that was causing the noise. it took me a couple of seconds to realize exactly what had happened. i freaked out and almost wrecked my car going back the couple of blocks to wear we heard the loud noise. i pulled up, and there was a perplexed man standing there holding what was left of my D7. i grabbed it from him and got back in the car. i was almost in tears at this point. so, the D7 fell off my car onto the street at around 40mph, then proceeded to get run over by at least one more car according to the guy on the street. the batteries that were in it were laying in the street broken in half, but amazingly the D7 was still in one piece. the battery sled must have come out and gotten run over seperately, but chris managed to get some spare batteries in it. we put the batteries in it, and the damned thing works! i tried recording us talking, and playing back. it worked. amazing. anyway, the backlight is the only thing that is fried (at least i hope). i went on to taped rush in houston and new orleans with it, and gov't mule/black crowes tonight in dallas. amazingly a guy actually wanted to patch out of me, even after hearing what happened and seeing the mangled D7. for gov't mule everything worked fine (D7>D7 7pin cable) but for the crowes he got "no input". switched the cable to chris's deck and all was well, so i guess there is a problem with its digi out. oh well, as stupid as i was, i cant believe i have a mostly working D7 still. on a related note, where is the best price for a D8 and/or a DA-P1?? if i owe anyone trades, it may be a couple of weeks til i get another deck. i dont want to put my masters in the thing to clone them. it doesnt exactly inspire confidence anymore. -- <><><><><><><><><> Brian V. I put my University's Sony TCD-D7 DAT Walkman in my soft-sided briefcase, along with some papers, the adapter, etc., and an unopened can of Diet Pepsi. While tossing the briefcase onto my car seat (I thought I WAS being careful), the pop can punctured (the Titanic had a smaller hole) and dumped into my briefcase. As was mentioned by Boyd Landerson in his experiences with the Kentucky floods, I had a similar experience with recovery from this drenching. First the clock came on, then the some of the controls worked, next the light, and finally the dat would play a tape. However, my problems aren't over. When I attempt to record with a mic, the meter shows appropriate record levels, you can hear it in the headphones, but it doesn't actually record or erase the previous recording. On the tape, it's as if you didn't record anything at all. I have cleaned the heads, which I didn't think would help, since it appears to record, even if it isn't. Does anyone have any other suggestions to try, before I ship it off to Sony for what I'm sure will be another expensive repair? -- DeWayne Purdy Communications Editor UNI Office of Public Relations dewayne.purdy@uni.edu or 319/273-2047
