"On the Edge" 6/16/96
TOM (host):
Hey, welcome to another week of "On the Edge." I'm Tom Calderone,
and this week, I bring you an hour of tunes and testosterone, featuring the
band who went from college frat parties in colonial Williamsburg to touring
the eastern seabourne within months. It's Seven Mary Three. And the
drummer Giti has a few words to say about his love life.
GITI (drummer):
Let's just say the callouses on my hands aren't necessarily from playing
the drum. [pause, laughing] Nah, just kidding!
CASEY (bassist):
Oh, my god...
TOM:
Let's get into Seven Mary Three, who found themselves signing a record
contract only a month after graduating college in Virginia. And guitarist
Jason Pollock has good things to say about their fans.
JASON P (guitarist):
The warmth that we feel in all the places that we go to we play. It's a
real special feeling to travel and play in a new place every night and
meet different people and feel welcome.
(Studio cut: My My)
JASON P:
There's not a bunch of kids wearing the same t-shirt or the same style of
clothing at our shows. It's people of all different ages, colors, and
socio-economic backgrounds, coming out -- parents bring their kids, and we
get the indie kids -- it's really kinda strange -- all at once. We
wouldn't want it any other way.
(Studio cut: Cumbersome)
TOM:
That's Cumbersome from Seven Mary Three's album, American Standard.
And the lyrics are something vocalist Jason Ross takes very seriously.
Take for example, the story behind Water's Edge.
JASON R (vocalist):
It's a true story about maybe being taken advantage of and the all-too-
common way that our society overlooks when authority figures is especially
taken advantage of something. No one wants to rock the boat, so we'll
overlook tragedy in the face of a chance to really stand up for something.
So I think it's kinda written in retrospective having not done something
when you should have. And you're feeling a little guilty about that.
(Studio cut: Water's Edge)
TOM:
That's Seven Mary Three and you're listening to "On the Edge," the main
course on your Westwood One entertainment menu. ...
