CONCERT SCRAPBOOK Center Stage, Cincinnatti, OH, 5/11/96 |

It might have been 30 degrees outside in Cincinnati last Saturday, but the crowd didn't let that bother them when it came to see Seven Mary Three. A little over 12,000 fans came to see them play for what they hoped would be an energized show fresh from Europe. Unfortunately, a few people spoiled it for everyone. The occasion was an annual outdoor music festival held in downtown Cincinnati where 2 - 3 blocks are closed off called Jammin' on Main.
Seven Mary Three wasn't scheduled to play until 10:45 PM but they closed the gates to the festival at 10:00 because of crowd overflow. Close to 11:00 the DJ's announced the band and the crowd roared with approval. They immediately started into Water's Edge much to the audience's delight. This is my fifth show to see them and I can't recall an audience this intense. Stage diving, moshing and surfing were all present during the first song. Needless to say the band sounded great. This is the first time I've seen them play outdoors and I was quite impressed. It seemed as if they were letting it all out because they weren't confined in a music hall.
Then things turned ugly. Unwilling participants began getting thrown under the stage and crushed into the security walls. During the second song, (I think it was My My) The crowd rushed forward and tore down all of the security barriers and thus made bouncers non existent. Police then came onstage and cut the band off. They made announcements to move back or they would cancel the show. The band tried to start again but by this time, chairs, bottles and other objects were being thrown at the police. The Fire Marshall then cancelled the show.
I would say 50% of the crowd left immediately. The rest just hung around and then bottles, chairs, and anything else that wasn't bolted to the ground were being thrown at the police. At this time they started making arrests but it only got worse. The crowd began tearing down the booths and fighting everywhere. The police then issued a phase 1 alert. This is a code that sends every available officer to the site of the riot. (FYI: Phase 2 is to call in the National Guard) The riot gear was put on and tear gas and mace filled the air. They marched side by side through the streets and making the arrests. After this, things pretty much calmed down. But as I said earlier, unfortunately Seven Mary Three weren't able to put on the outstanding show they are so well known for.
Luckily, being friends with Giti, my friends and I got a chance to catch up with the band back at the hotel and out to a club. It wasn't the evening we had planned, exciting but not in the way we had hoped. I'll just have to wait until they come back around.
Cincy Concert a DisorderSuperGimp
A concert at a festival erupts into a clash between police and a crowd of 200 Police arrested 16 people and used tear gass to disperse a crowd of about 200 people at a rock concert, a police supervisor said Sunday.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reported dozens of people were injured, mostly because of tear gas. One witness told the newspaper that police clubbed fans who got on the bandstand.
"People were jumping on stage, and police would just beat them on the stage," said Katie Sherff, 16, of Mariemont. "Then they lined up on both sides of the stage and started beating on their shields with their clubs."
Police in riot gear lined up on the main stage Saturday night and shut down the concert by the rock band Seven Mary Three. The concert was part of a street festival.
The crowd was estimated at 10,000. A smaller crowd of about 200 faced off for about half and hour with a line of about 75 police officers in riot gear across a street. About midnight Saturday, the crowd started throwing beer bottles at officers, police said. The officers responded with tear gas.
Leslyn Bailey, police communications shift supervisor, said she was not aware of any attacks on officers and said no officers were injured. She had no information on how many were injured by the tear gas or what charges were filed.
However, a police media line said the charges were disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Bailey referred calls to a police supervisor who did not return a phone message. Ron Beaudrey, 32, of Covington, Ky., said police seemed under attack at times.
I want you to know that this past weekend I went to the 7M3 Concert and it kicked ass! The only problem was that the crowd was so roudy and moshing and crowd surfing and jumping up on stage that the cops stopped the concert. Let me tell you how much of a pisser that was. Well, I just wanted to let you know because I found out about the concert from your page so I thought you'd like to know. By the way, the lead singer is HOT!!Madder
I was at the infamous Cincinnati, Ohio 7 Mary 3 concert. The concert that 7m3 playes at was part of a local music concert where there were local bands playing on stage. I made my way into the "pit" while the other preformers were finishing their set. It took about 15-30 minnutes for the sound check to finish.
Then 7m3 came on stage. Mr. Ross came up to the mic and told us to stop moshing and/or croud surfing, or the cops would stop the concert. We didn't give a fuck. Then he just stood there for a second. They started their set with My My. But it wasn't the same My My that is on the CD. He yells "My My stoma- and then the band kicks in. It was totally fucking awsome. The Moshers in the pit went crazy, my self included.
After My My they told us to calm down and then went into Watersedge. When he got to the part that goes "this ain't no fucking game" he stood there with a look on his face like you want me to say fucking so here it is.
Then they played Devil Boy. I didn't see much of this, because i was making my way out of the pit. By this time the crowd had lifted the fences up from in front of the stage and some people jumped up there and jumped off. One of the unfortunate people got the shit beat out of him by the cops.
Then they got into another song that I didn't get the name of, but its not on the CD. Half way through the cops stoped it. I got the hell out of there before the mace started. I think the only way to appriciate 7M3 is to go to a concert. The CD rocks. 7m3 is coming back on July 30 and I'm gonna try to get tickets.
